Applying to colleges can be daunting.
When many colleges receive tens of thousands of applications for a limited number of spots, and many of those applicants have similar grades and test scores, how can you make your application stand out?
The personal essay is your opportunity to introduce your real self to admissions officers and show them why you’ll be an excellent addition to their college’s student community.
You don’t have to have a life-altering, world-changing story to write a good college application essay. (In fact, most teenagers don’t). If you do, that’s great, but you can make just about any topic work, as long as it’s something that matters to you and reveals something deeper about who you are.
First, pinpoint what you want them to know about you. Then, no matter what you write about, build your essay around that central theme, using your voice to tell your story.
That’s your essay in a nutshell.

Before you start your first draft, though, it’s important to know why you’re writing an essay in the first place. The essay section is just one piece of your whole application. Understanding the part essays play will make your personal statement and supplemental answers more effective.
